Escuela Tlatelolco Centro de Estudios' Governance and Operation

The Corporation is governed by a board of trustees that provide resources, expertise and advocacy in the development of the school curriculum and programs. The full board meets every other month throughout the school year. There are three standing committees that meet on a monthly basis: the Executive Committee, the Academic Committee and the Fundraising/Development Committee. The Executive Committee is made up of the officers of the corporation and the chairs of the Board committees. The Executive Committee meets every month and oversees the financial condition of the organization, as well as personnel policies. The board also assists the Corporation by providing long-term policy direction, academic quality assurance and oversight and manpower toward achieving long-term goals, such as renovation of the school facility and expansion of Tlatelolco's educational program.

The Board of Trustees is a self-perpetuating board. The President/CEO is accountable to the board and is also a non-voting member of the board of trustees. A list of the 2009-2010 board of trustees is attached. Trustees serve either one, two, or three year terms and there are no term limits for service on the board.

The President/CEO and administration staff are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Corporation. They make curriculum, personnel, Escuela Tlatelolco selection, Escuela Tlatelolco discipline, routine equipment acquisition and maintenance decisions. The board provides oversight for these individuals. Escuela Tlatelolco Centro de Estudios currently has a six-member administrative staff, two Family Services staff, and an 18-member faculty.

Set forth below is certain biographical information for key members of the Corporation's administration.

President/CEO - Nita J. Gonzales, M.Ed. has been employed as President/CEO of the Corporation since 1982. Prior to that she was a teacher at Escuela Tlatelolco for eight years. In addition to teaching all levels of Escuela (grades 1-12), Ms. Gonzales has served as a Professor of Political Science at Metropolitan State College and Director of Youth Services for Servicios de La Raza. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Education in Educational Administration from Antioch University (1977). As President/CEO of Escuela Tlatelolco Centro de Estudios, Ms. Gonzales is responsible for the overall management of the school. She has extensive experience providing leadership around educational issues in the Latino community and works closely with the Board of Trustees to advocate for excellence in teaching and learning at Escuela as well as in the larger community of Denver. Ms. Gonzales also collaborates with the faculty and staff of Escuela to ensure that the highest quality-learning environment is consistently maintained for all students.
